There are two choices available when creating and sending emails: HTML (hypertext markup language) or plain text.

With plain text, what you see is what you get…one font with no special style, formatting or images. Now HTML email just like a webpage can be well "wow!" The use of color, images, special design are all features that can explode your email with lots of flash and style.

If HTML is so visually appealing, then why am I sending this email in plain, old text? Quite simply, I am going to share with you why I personally use html mail filters as well as other valid issues about HTML that cause other users to do the same.

1. Computer destroying software & code can be embedded within HTML email messages. The recent worms "Forgotten" and "I Love You" reeked havoc on computer users. When an email containing "Forgotten" was opened, someone had embedded the destructive code within the message using scripting that unleashed the worm just by opening. And the "I Love You" script used vulnerabilities in ActiveX, which caused the worm to enter the user's system just by looking at the html email. Both these worms did not involve any type of attachment. Plain and simple, they infected the system just by being opened.
2. Pornographic messages can arrive via HTML. The pictures these messages contain are the hope of porn businesses that count on readers opening the email and then visiting their sites.
3. Want more Spam? Open HTML email. Many times spam messages will contain small pictures in the file, which spammers use to glean private information from your computer. When this email is opened, the spammer's picture is called up from their webserver. This action alone will give the spam company your IP address, but smart spam companies have written into their picture encrypted code that allows them to see whether your address is a valid one. Once they know they have a working email address, they can sell your email to a list service as well as continue to send you email
4. Many people filter out HTML email because the files are large and slow to download when opened. Make sure to add business associates, family and friends to your "accepted" list so any html emails they send will always get to you. Otherwise, stay safe with plain text messages from people and businesses you do not know.
